Small Steps Can Help Protect Lives

Reducing the risk of suicide in Deniliquin is something we can all be part of — together.

Open, safe, and respectful conversations about suicide matter. They’re not always easy to start, and many people worry about saying the wrong thing. But silence can leave people feeling even more alone.

Loss through suicide has touched communities across Australia, including ours. While the impact is deeply felt, there is also hope.

“Small steps can have a big impact,” said Lourene Liebenberg, President of Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group (Deni MHAG). “Checking in, listening, and talking openly can genuinely make a difference.”

This week’s Sticky Topics campaign highlights the Deni MHAG STEPS Suicide Prevention initiative, reminding us that simple actions — noticing changes, starting a gentle conversation, or listening without judgement — can help protect lives.

Every conversation has the potential to open a door to support.

For those wanting to build confidence and skills, Deni MHAG also offers free Mental Health First Aid training.👉 www.denimentalhealth.org.au/training

Together, through awareness, compassion, and connection, we can reduce the risk of suicide in our community.

The Sticky Topics campaign is funded by Firsthealth Limited and Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network Community Grants through the Australian Government’s PHN Program, with local support from Edward River Council, Deniliquin Pastoral Times, and Ace Radio 2QN.

If you want, I can make this even tighter (e.g. 2–3 short paragraphs for social or a half-column newspaper version) or adapt it for posters or radio.
