Halloween is Coming to Deni – in the Daytime!

Halloween will look a little different in Deni this year, with the Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group bringing our annual free family Halloween event into the daytime.

Join us on Saturday 31 October from 11 am to 1 pm at Waring Gardens for two hours of Spooktacular fun, activities and safe trick-or-treating for the whole family.

The Deni MHAG committee has been thinking for some time about how we could make the event a little easier for families to attend. In previous years, we know some parents have struggled to get there after work, while others have arrived later and missed some of the activities.

With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, we thought – why not give a daytime Halloween a go?

A community event with a difference

Our local businesses have been really positive about the idea and keen to continue supporting Deni’s Safe Trick-or-Treat Walk.

As always, families will be able to collect a Safe Trick-or-Treat map and follow the route to participating businesses. Along the way, there will also be activities provided by local businesses and service providers.

Back at Waring Gardens, there’ll be plenty happening, including stalls, resources and activities, prizes and a free sausage sizzle, with Rotary once again supporting the event.

And, of course, it’s free for everyone.

Mental health – it’s not as scary as you think

Halloween gives us a fun way to share an important message:

Mental health: It’s not as scary as you think.

This year’s Mental Health Month theme, “A Little Connection Goes a Long Way,” fits beautifully with what this event is all about.

Here in Deni, we also have our own message – “In Deni, we look out for each other.” It’s a message we used for our Suicide Prevention Walk and one we’re carrying through into our Mental Health Month activities.

Connection can be as simple as joining in, having a conversation or spending time together.

Our Halloween event is another opportunity to do just that – for families to come out together, grandparents to join their families, friends to meet up, and kids and groups of friends to enjoy the fun together.

Whatever your family or friendship group looks like, come along, join in, have some fun, share a sausage and spend a little time connecting with others in our community.

In Deni, we look out for each other.

Resources and pathways to help

Our Deni MHAG resource packs will also be available on the day, along with some of our usual giveaways and goodies.

While Halloween is about having fun, our message remains the same throughout everything we do – conversations matter.

Our resources include practical information about what a conversation can look like if you’re worried about someone, how to start that conversation, and what to do if you’re worried about yourself and need some help.

They’re also about making it easier to find pathways to help – whether that’s local support, telephone support, or online services that you can access when and where you need them.

Want to be involved?

We’d love to hear from businesses and service providers who would like to participate in the event.

We’d also welcome some extra volunteers on the day. If you can help with setting up earlier that morning, handing out maps and resources, helping families along the route, or assisting at one of our safe street crossings, please get in touch with Deni MHAG.
