Brave Enough to Talk About It

Mental Health Month – Connection Goes a Long Way

In Deni, we look out for each other.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is take the first step.

Being brave enough doesn’t mean having everything worked out.

Sometimes it simply means recognising that something doesn’t feel right — and being brave enough to look for help.

Being Brave Enough to Take the First Step

The Brave Enough initiative began in Deniliquin last October, when Jelena Dokic joined our community and spoke openly about courage, honesty, healing and the importance of asking for help.

In her book Fearless: Finding the Power to Thrive, Jelena talks about finding your voice, reaching out for help and rebuilding when life has been difficult. Her story carries an important message of hope — that what has happened to us does not have to define what happens next.

The Brave Enough message is simple:

Be brave enough to notice when things don’t feel right.

Be brave enough to take that first step and talk.

Be brave enough to listen with kindness.

Be brave enough to believe things can change.

Sometimes that first step is the hardest because it comes before you can see the way forward. You don’t need to have everything worked out before you begin.

Taking the first step is OK. You don’t have to face things alone. Support exists.

Calm Cool Connected

Sometimes we know we’re not feeling quite right, but we don’t necessarily know why — or what sort of help we should be looking for.

The Calm Cool Connected page is designed to help you explore some of the things you may be experiencing, understand a little more about what might be going on, and find appropriate pathways to support.

Maybe:

  • worry won’t switch off, or sadness is starting to take over;

  • home doesn’t feel safe;

  • thoughts about food or your body are becoming overwhelming;

  • something you have been using to cope is beginning to cause problems of its own; or

  • the challenges of parenthood are feeling harder than expected.

Whatever is happening, you don’t need to wait until things become worse before looking for help.

The Calm Cool Connected page provides information about these and other challenges and can help connect you with trusted information, local services and other appropriate pathways to support.

In Deni, we’re brave enough to talk.

Taking the first step is OK.

Brave Enough. Connection Goes a Long Way.
